Here’s a great chai recipe -

- water

- 2 cloves

Abhyanga Ayurvedic Daily Massage-Be Your Own Massage Therapist

Massage is really important as it opens all the channels of the body – making it clear and free from toxins.

Here’s a great read from Maharishi Ayurveda -

If getting on a massage table once a week is out of the question, you can practice the art of abhyanga, Ayurveda’s daily oil massage, on your own. It’s just a matter of taking however many minutes you can spare- from two to 20- to give your skin some love. It’s a powerful tool before or after a shower and has healing qualities. This gentle massage will increase circulation, loosen toxins, and stimulate nerve endings resulting in a sense of calm you can carry with you. Follow these how-to instructions the first time, and soon you’ll be a pro.

Place a small amount of Rejuvenation Massage Oil for Women or Rejuvenation Massage Oil for Men, from the Maharishi Ayurveda Products in the palm of your hand for each point listed below. Massage in a circular direction over joints and in a back-and-forth motion over long bones.

-Massage the face and outer part of the ears.

-Massage both the front and back of the neck and the upper part of the spine.

-Massage the arms, using a back-and-forth motion over the long bones and circular motion over the joints.

-Use a circular motion to massage over the heart and a clockwise motion over the abdomen.

-Massage the legs, using the same long motion over the leg bones and a circular motion over the joints.

-Last but not least, massage the feet. Use the open part of your hand to massage vigorously back-and-forth over the soles.

Rejuvenation Massage Oil for Women and Rejuvenation Massage Oil for Men is a precise blend of ayurvedic herbs and pure essential oils that penetrate quickly into the skin. A good time to do the above massage is right after showering. Using small amounts will help you avoid feeling too oily. After abhyanga you can use a natural bristle body brush with a vigorous motion upward toward your heart on the front and back of your feet, legs, arms, back and tummy. This is really easy and takes less than 5 minutes in the morning. It can be done before going to bed as well. A good time to do the above massage is either before or after showering.

Weight Loss Starts In The Kitchen

Read this article and wanted to share.  What do you think?

10 changes in how you arrange and do up your kitchen and see how you end up loosing extra kilos.

While eating healthier is on the to-do list for many, our kitchen can make it harder to eat healthy, and easier to fill ourselves with snacks and junk food. But there are ways to make the home more conducive to better eating. Planning meals in advance can go a long way, but it is also important to plan how the foods you buy go into your kitchen.

Making good food easier to see and access and making unhealthy foods harder is the trick to a healthier eating environment. Here’s how you can rearrange your kitchen to encourage healthy eating habits.

Clear your counters -

Easily visible food provides a constant reminder of its availability, and is likely to be eaten first. So make sure snack foods don’t have a prominent place. The last thing you want is a clear cookie jar on the counter.

Buy a fruit bowl -

It’s important to make sure the visible fruits and vegetables are ones that are easy to eat and don’t invite flies to sit on them. Store apples, oranges, bananas and as opposed to grapes, pineapples and mangoes.

Invest in single-serving containers -

When stashing away leftovers, it is best to put them away in meal-size portions, whether for future lunches or dinners. At times, calorie-dense dinner leftovers might make for a more appealing snack than baby carrots, but you may be less likely to dig in if you know it will leave you hungry at lunch the next day. Choosing freezersafe containers will give you even more storage options.

Get see-through jars -

Follow the school lunch programme recommendations, which limit calorie-dense foods like complex starches, fats and proteins but make fruits and vegetables completely available in whatever quantity people want. Some fruits and vegetables need advance prep and cutting, but once they go into the refrigerator, they should be in clear containers, to remind you of what to grab when you are hungry between meals.

Use your freezer more -

If you don’t have a definite plan for your leftovers, then avoid tossing them in the refrigerator. A freezer allows you to put away food for future use rather than snacking down on leftover chicken or lasagna instead of eating an apple. It also allows for better meal planning.

Put healthy eats at eye level -

Depending on the type of refrigerator you have, you may benefit from some rearranging.

Some refrigerators with a freezer on the bottom have clear vegetable bins at eye level. But if you have a refrigerator where the freezer is at the top, and the vegetable bin is at your knees, then there’s a good reason not to keep your veggies in the drawer. Opaque bins keep your healthiest — and more perishable — foods hidden. So if you have them, don’t put fruits and veggie in the crisper, instead, put them higher up, in a visible spot.

Prepare fruits and other snacks in advance -

As much as you avoid it, some snacking is bound to happen. So it is worth buying the products that are in little, single packages. It’s much easier then to know exactly what you’re eating.”

But for the frugal, those small packages represent an extra expense, so pick up some small bags and doling out portions of snacks that are healthier, such as pretzels.

Some similar prep work can help with snacking before dinner. In addition, have on hand healthier snacks, such as yogurt and cheese, that are already parcelled out.

Add non-food accessories to your kitchen -

Food prepared at home is almost inevitably healthier than takeout, so it’s important that cooking at home is an enjoyable experience.

Keeping kitchen counters free of books, bags and papers so that they can be used to prepare food is a start. Some even keep a television in their cooking space, but you should ensure that it should be kept at a spot when you can’t watch from the table.

Eat only in the kitchen -

When people eat anywhere in the house, other activities they do while eating will often trigger a signal in the brain to start eating.

Many people eat while watching TV, or just start snacking. Confining all eating to the kitchen can put a dent in that, she said.

Get smaller plates and taller, narrower glasses

A recent research suggested how we decide what to eat and how to eat depends on the plate and portion size.

Larger plates lead to eating larger portions — people tend to finish what they put on their plate.

Dish size is a potential aid for people looking to get new dishes, or willing to replace old ones. Have smaller plates. That advice can carry over to glasses, given the number of calories some beverages contain. You’ll drink less from a tall glass than a glass that is wider. It also gives the illusion of having more.

Benefits Of Walking

get-attachment.aspx

The human body is made to walk.

Walking 30 minutes a day cuts the rate of people becoming diabetic by more than half and it cuts the risk of people over 60 becoming diabetic by almost 70 percent.

Walking cuts the risk of stroke by more than 25 percent.

Walking reduces hypertension.  The body has over 100,000 miles of blood vessels.  Those blood vessels are more supple and healthier when we walk.

Walking cuts the risk of cancer as well as diabetes and stroke.

Women who walk have a 20 percent lower likelihood of getting breast cancer and a 31 percent lower risk of getting colon cancer.

Women with breast cancer who walk regularly can reduce their recurrence rate and their mortality rate by over 50 percent.

The human body works better when we walk.  The body resists diseases better when we walk, and the body heals faster when we walk.

We don’t have to walk a lot.  Thirty minutes a day has a huge impact on our health.

Men who walk thirty minutes a day have a significantly lower level of prostate cancer.  Men who walk regularly have a 60 percent lower risk of colon cancer.

For men with prostate cancer, studies have shown that walkers have a 46 percent lower mortality rate.

Walking also helps prevent depression, and people who walk regularly are more likely to see improvements in their depression.

In one study, people who walked and took medication scored twice as well in 30 days as the women who only took the medication. Another study showed that depressed people who walked regularly had a significantly higher level of not being depressed in a year compared to depressed people who did not walk.  The body generates endorphins when we walk. Endorphins help us feel good.

Walking strengthens the heart.  Walking strengthens bones.

Walking improves the circulatory system.

Walking generates positive neurochemicals.  Healthy eating is important but dieting can trigger negative neurochemicals and can be hard to do.

Walking generates positive neurochemicals.  People look forward to walking and enjoy walking.

And research shows that fit beats fat for many people.  Walking half an hour a day has health benefits that exceed the benefits of losing 20 pounds.

When we walk every day, our bodies are healthier and stronger.  A single 30 minute walk can reduce blood pressure by five points for over 20 hours.

Walking reduces the risk of blood clots in your legs.

People who walk regularly have much lower risk of deep vein thrombosis.

People who walk are less likely to catch colds, and when people get colds, walkers have a 46 percent shorter symptom time from their colds.

Walking improves the health of our blood, as well.  Walking is a good boost of high density cholesterol and people with high levels of HDL are less likely to have heart attacks and stroke.

Walking significantly diminishes the risk of hip fracture and the need for gallstone surgery is 20 to 31 percent lower for walkers.

Walking is the right thing to do. The best news is that the 30 minutes doesn’t have to be done in one lump of time. Two 15 minute walks achieve the same goals. Three 10 minute walks achieve most of those goals.

We can walk 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night and achieve our walking goals.

Walking feels good.  It helps the body heal.  It keeps the body healthy.  It improves our biological health, our physical health, our psychosocial health, and helps with our emotional health. Walking can literally add years entire years to your life.

Say No To Cold

Adding ice to drinks, especially in the summer time is okay, right?  Well, no it is not!

Ice old beverages basically extinguish the digestive fire – the fire that is needed to digest that ice cold beverage you just had, along with the meal.

Something like ice cold milk, juice, or even water puts out the fire.

Cold drinks and foods mixed with warm cooked foods can cause stomach cramps, bloating and discomfort in the stomach area.

So say no to cold!

Deadly Truth About Microwave Oven

There is a harmful cooking device found in 90% of the kitchens across the United States and other parts of the world. People are using this device in order to cook, defrost, or reheat their food each day. The microwave oven sitting on the counter in so many homes may be posing dangerous risks to people’s health.

The original microwave was invented by the Nazis during World War II as a portable cooking device for their troops. This enabled them to prepare meals using one piece of equipment on a large scale for their troops with convenience and without the hassle of transporting cooking fuels and extraneous equipment.

After the war, it was researched by American scientists and then went on the market for home use in the 1970s. The microwave was also researched by the Russians who decided to take opposite action regarding it. In fact, after conducting independent research on the microwave, the Russian government made the use of it illegal.

The Russian scientists who tested the microwaves concluded that they destroy the nutrients of food cooked in them and the resulting food becomes carcinogenic. Carcinogens have been found to potentially cause cancer.

What is So Bad About Microwave?

The FDA has tested and only allows microwaves on the market that are estimated to have safe levels of radiation, but there is still potential for a microwave to cause radiation to leak into the homes of those who use them. The problem with radiation in homes is a disconcerting factor, but the degradation of the food people are cooking in microwaves is of even greater concern.

Microwaves are electromagnetic energy waves that transmit information to basic communication systems such as television signals, satellite signals, and telephone signals across the planet. These types of electromagnetic energy waves are used in that black box that is referred to, as the name implies, as a microwave. A tube in the microwave called a magnetron generates micro wavelength radiation and interacts with the water molecules in the food which cooks it through steaming.

The water molecules in the food that is being cooked have negative and positive ends and when they are microwaved, they vibrate to their opposite polarities at very high frequencies. The radiation changes the polarity of the molecules in the food millions of times every second and deforms the molecular structure of the food particle. Therefore, microwaves damage the food as a means to heat it.

Due to the radiation from the microwave, the food no longer has the same structure and consequently does not offer the same value to one’s body when eaten. Microwaved food is denatured food which becomes carcinogenic in the body when consumed by people. Microwaving also decreases the body’s ability to use the vitamins and minerals left in the food. Yet, after being cooked in a microwave, there are almost no nutrients left in the food and it is close to the point of decay.

Essentially, microwaving food causes the beneficial properties of the food to become poison. For example, when milk is microwaved the beneficial amino acids, which are known as the building blocks of protein and are an essential part of human nutrition, turn into carcinogens. Another example is when vegetables that are raw, frozen, or previously cooked are heated through microwave radiation, the plant alkaloids are converted into carcinogens.

As a result of the molecular changes that take place in microwaved food, when people consume it they are taking a serious risk with their health. German and Russian researchers concluded that many biological processes are harmfully affected by eating microwaved foods. They believe that digestive disorders, increases of cancer cell formation in the blood, and lymphatic disorders are caused by consuming microwaved foods over extended periods of time.

There is also a term called “microwave sickness,” coined by Robert O. Becker, about the detrimental health effects on humans with high exposures to the radiation from microwaves. The most common symptoms of “microwave sickness” are stress syndrome and high blood pressure. Other common symptoms of “microwave sickness” are headaches, insomnia, immune system disorders, and vision problems, among many others.

Other research indicates that consuming microwaved food causes changes in the blood that can have detrimental health effects on consumers. A controversial and very small study done by Dr. Hans Hertel, a Swiss food scientist, concluded that these changes in the blood after consuming microwaved foods resulted in higher cholesterol levels, decreased white and red blood cells, increased amounts of radiolytic compounds, and lowered hemoglobin levels. These are all conditions which may pose serious risk to the health of an individual.

Using a microwave to defrost, cook, and reheat food is definitely convenient. Yet, doing so wastes money by depleting food of important nutrients and therefore denaturing the food’s essential purpose as fuel for the body. Consuming microwaved food also creates a toxic environment in the body and leaves it not only susceptible to diseases and health problems, but contributes toxins in order to create them. Thus, it is important to have other options for reheating, cooking, and defrosting food rather than using a microwave oven.

Practical Ways to Heat Up Your Food

There are many viable ways in order to avoid microwave use without completely sacrificing convenience when planning meals. An excellent way to ensure that vitamins and minerals in food are left unbroken is to incorporate raw vegetables into meals every day. Minimal processing of vegetables allows the body to access all of the nutrients that it needs from the raw plants. Yet, it is not necessary to eat everything raw in order to keep the integrity of the food intact.

A convection oven or toaster oven can be used to reheat food and both of these are less damaging to foods than microwaves. Defrosting food requires nothing more than removing the food from the freezer and leaving it in a sink full of water for a few hours. Many cultures over the world cook and reheat foods on the stovetop rather than relying on a microwave for convenience.

The most practical ways to lessen the need for a microwave are to plan ahead and to prepare meals that require minimal amounts of cooking! Leaving microwave cooking as a relic of the past will enable better health for those on the planet and will provide a better opportunity for the health of future generations.

Tip Of The Day

According to Ayurveda, drinking water at the end of a meal is wrong.

It destroys the jathar agni (the fire that is present in the stomach and that which facilitates digestion).

When drinking water after a meal, it rots the food inside the system and doesn’t digest.

Organic Is Best For Kids

I read a great article by Dr. Alan Greene, a pediatrician and he explains why organic is the best choice we can make for our families. A poll out last week from the Organic Trade Association found a sharp decrease in parents who say price is a key factor limiting their organic purchases.  “Parents in charge of the household budget recognize the benefits of organic, and they’re willing to pay a little more to know that they are giving their families the highest-quality and most healthy products being offered in their local store,” said the trade group’s Laura Batcha.

By definition, organics cannot be grown from GMO seeds.  Organic agriculture does not use synthetic pesticides and our organic farmers work hard to avoid contamination from GMOs.  Lets take back control of our food!

Organic is best for kids -

1 – children fed an organic diet have much lower levels of high risk insecticides

2 – choosing organic food reduces the health risks of toxic pesticides by 94%

3 – The American Academy of Pediatrics warned about children’s exposure to pesticides

4 – organic dairy has higher levels of heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids

Organic is one of the best choice we can make for the health of our families.

To Make A Killing On Wall Street, Start Meditating

I love this article!  And I practice TM!  This is great!

When stock and bond markets took a dive in late January, hedge-fund manager David Ford kept his cool.
Ford watched emerging markets melt down and read warnings that the U.S. economy could crater too. As prices dropped, he overcame the impulse to flee with the rest of the herd and, instead, bought more corporate bonds, Bloomberg Pursuits will report in its Summer 2014 issue.
More from Bloomberg Pursuits:
Browse the new issue
Download for iPad
After two decades as a trader, Ford credits his serenity to experience — and to the 20 minutes he spends in his pajamas each morning repeating a meaningless mantra bestowed on him by a teacher of Transcendental Meditation two years ago.
“I react to volatile markets much more calmly now,” Ford, 48, says. “I have more patience.”
He also has more money. Latigo Partners LP, his event-driven credit fund, climbed 24 percent last year. He almost beat the surging stock market with a bond fund. Ford is part of a growing number of Wall Street traders, including A-list hedge-fund managers Ray Dalio, Paul Tudor Jones and Michael Novogratz, who are fine-tuning their brains — and upping their games — with meditation. Billionaire investor Daniel Loeb, who once likened a chief executive officer to a drug addict during one of his frequent public rants, in February praised meditation while sharing a stage with the Dalai Lama in Washington, D.C.

The idea that Type-A traders are seeking profit with the same tool that Buddhist monks use to achieve enlightenment might seem like sacrilege. Yet most people misunderstand meditation, says Jay Michaelson, author of “Evolving Dharma: Meditation, Buddhism, and the Next Generation of Enlightenment.”

Samurai Practice
“Meditation used to have this reputation as a hippie thing for people who speak in a particularly soft tone of voice,” Michaelson says. Not so. “Samurai practiced meditation to become more effective killers,” he says. So too did kamikaze pilots. “It’s value neutral,” Michaelson says.

Workers at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) are folding into the lotus position in droves, says Elizabeth Sudler, an instructor the firm retains. Classes where students breathe and monitor their wandering minds have waiting lists several hundred long, Goldman spokesman David Wells says. One trader there gets a twinge in his gut when he senses a move in the markets, Sudler says. Meditating gives him an edge, he told her, by tuning into that sensation more reliably. Others report downshifting more easily after work and sleeping better at night.

“Goldman employees are under a lot of pressure to produce,” Sudler says. “No one wants to be left behind.”

Anxiety, Psoriasis
Meditation is going mainstream in part because science is substantiating what heretofore had been taken on faith. Up until 1983, only three peer-reviewed studies on meditation had ever been published, Michaelson says. By last year, there were more than 1,300 studies showing an almost absurd number of benefits, from alleviating anxiety, depression and insomnia to reducing heart disease and speeding recovery from psoriasis.

A 2005 study published by Harvard Medical School neuroscientist Sara Lazar showed that meditating enhances the prefrontal cortex, likely creating more connections between neurons and enlarging blood vessels. Among other functions, the prefrontal cortex processes sensory information, handles rational decisions and regulates the amygdala, the structure that feeds our fight-or-flight instinct. A tame amygdala may be why David Ford bought bonds amid the panic — a prescient move as markets rebounded.

‘Brain Hacking’
Michaelson calls meditation “brain hacking,” because it exploits the elastic nature of our gray matter, altering its makeup, as Lazar and other scientists have proved. As such, it may be the ultimate disruptive technology, he says. That kind of talk gets the attention of traders, says Jeff Walker, former head of JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s private-equity unit and a longtime meditator.

“These guys are saying, ‘There’s an edge here that I need,’” Walker says.

Humans have been meditating in some form for millennia. Hindu texts from 1500 BC describe the practice, which hit the big time when a Hindu prince named Siddhartha Gautama became disenchanted with the empty opulence of the day and took up residence beneath a fig tree to contemplate the causes of human suffering. (Hint: Desire is a key culprit.) Through the teachings of Siddhartha — who sat down a prince and, after 49 days, arose the Buddha — mindful meditation radiated out into the world.

Inhaling, Exhaling
There are many forms of meditation. Vipassana, for example, starts with concentrating on one thing, such as the breath. If a dog barks, you might register it before quickly refocusing on inhaling and exhaling. Mental intrusions are treated the same way: Thoughts such as “book NetJets” or “offload bitcoins” quickly pass like leaves floating on a stream.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, founding executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, defines mindfulness as “paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment and nonjudgmentally.” The aim is to become more aware of the present and avoid getting hijacked by the past or the future. Central to Buddhism are the unsettling notions that everything we know is impermanent and that all we have is the here and now.

Transcendental Meditation uses a mantra — the repetition of a single sound — to settle the mind into its least-excited state. The TM folks, through the years, have consistently asserted their superiority over other disciplines.

Wellness Benefits
The website of the nonprofit Maharishi Foundation USA, for example, has variously claimed that “only TM has been found in hundreds of studies to produce immediate and long-term wellness benefits of mind and body” and that “no other program for personal development has received this level of attention and respect from the scientific community.”
Transcendental Meditation was developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (née Mahesh Prasad Varma). Born near Jabalpur, India, around 1918, the Maharishi, or Great Seer, started teaching his method in 1955 and became a guru to the Beatles, who famously traveled to Rishikesh, India, in 1968 to study with him.
Despite Transcendental Meditation’s claims of superiority, John Denninger, director of research at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, isn’t so sure.
“I’m not convinced that any difference in outcome is big enough to say you need to do one type of meditation over another,” Denninger says. “Getting people to do it in the first place is what matters.”

Perceptive Monks
Some of the most-striking research has come from the University of California at Davis. Clifford Saron, a neuroscientist there who speaks with the slow, gentle tone of a holy man, went to the foothills of the Himalayas in the 1990s to study Buddhist monks. Their serene focus inspired him to organize the Shamatha Project. With his friend and former monk B. Alan Wallace, Saron selected 60 people and tested their attention and cognition. Thirty of them then attended a meditation retreat in Colorado. (The other 30 went later.)

After three months, Saron re-examined the initial group and discovered any number of striking changes. For one, the meditators were literally more perceptive: They could discern smaller differences between long and short lines flashed on a screen.

“How much does an infant learn when it is alert and relaxed?” Saron asks rhetorically. “That works for us, as well.”

Lower Cortisol
Some of Saron’s subjects also exhibited lowered levels of cortisol, the hormone produced by the adrenal gland to help us deal with stressful situations, such as getting chased by a water buffalo — or watching a stock holding get crushed after an unfavorable earnings report. (Cortisol is also associated with increased belly fat and diminished cognitive performance; in other words, it makes us fat and stupid.)

Perhaps most surprising: Levels of telomerase, an enzyme that protects genetic material during cell division and delays cell death, were higher in the retreat group. By boosting telomerase, meditation could possibly extend life.

Skeptics, including some who’ve logged countless hours of silent sitting, say that the promise of meditation sometimes exceeds what’s practical. Tony Schwartz, author of “Be Excellent at Anything: The Four Keys to Transforming the Way We Work and Live,” says he’s meditated for hundreds of hours, starting 25 years ago.

Lotus Position
“But the more time I spent meditating, the less value I derived from it,” he wrote in a January column in the New York Times. Nor has he seen evidence that the practice makes people happier or leads to better behavior. “Don’t expect more than it can deliver,” he wrote.

Meditation’s arrival on Wall Street closes a circle of sorts. Whereas Siddhartha Gautama took to the lotus position out of frustration with his riches, traders are hitting the mat to obtain them. Dalio, for example, runs the largest hedge-fund firm in the world and is worth $14 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He’s also the most vocal proponent of meditation in finance and claims the practice has been the single biggest factor in his success.

Dalio, 64, discovered Transcendental Meditation through the Beatles. He’s been at it for 42 years, sitting for 20 minutes, twice on most days, he says. He’s so convinced of its benefits that he pays half the cost of Transcendental Meditation instruction for the employees at his Westport, Connecticut–based Bridgewater Associates LP.

‘Like a Ninja’
A competitive edge, not enlightenment, seems to be driving Dalio. “I feel like a ninja in a fight,” Dalio said of his professional equanimity, during a February panel discussion in New York on the benefits of meditation. “When it comes at you, it seems like slow motion.”

Tudor Jones is another hedge-fund billionaire on a quest for inner peace and profit. A PBS documentary from 1987 shows him trading in the most agitated, un-Buddhalike manner imaginable. Twenty-five years later, he and his wife, Sonia, an Ashtanga yoga enthusiast, gave $12 million to create the Contemplative Sciences Center at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Jones’s alma mater.

David Mick teaches an undergraduate business school course there called “Cultivating Wisdom and Well-Being for Personal and Professional Growth.” He recommends meditation and takes each semester’s students on a field trip to Yogaville, a nearby ashram. “You can’t be a wiser person if you can’t discipline your mind,” says Mick, who meditates every morning.

‘Powerful Drug’
Willoughby Britton, a neuroscientist at Brown University, warns that neophytes should proceed with caution. Spending hours contemplating impermanence can foster anxiety and sadness. She has seen people experience psychotic episodes on meditation retreats, convincing themselves, for example, that the teacher is evil and must be killed. “This is a powerful drug; it’s not a hot bath,” Britton says, adding that the risks are worth the rewards.

Unlike some other Western practitioners, Joan Halifax, a roshi, or revered teacher, at the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, says she’s concerned the lords of finance are using meditation for unjust ends, ignoring the moral principles embodied in Buddhism.

“You can train people with meditation to be sharpshooters,” she says. “Are they trying to get smarter so they can exploit more people? Or are they interested in creating a more just financial system?”

Dalio, for one, has agreed to give most of his fortune to charity under the Giving Pledge program started by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, a move that would probably have impressed the Buddha himself, who lived by daana, or a spirit of generosity.

Before you give that fortune away, though, you have to earn it. Some of the brightest minds in finance are betting that meditation will help them do just that.

More On Triphala

Triphala should not be used during pregnancy due to potential risk to the fetus.  Since triphala stimulates the digestive system, the thinking goes that it will stimulate the baby.  Not only will the baby be more active, but the heartbeat can also increase.

Triphala also causes miscarriages.  Triphala causes a lot of the downward movement or downward flow, as to why this might occur. Muscle contractions are also known to be induced by triphala.

Triphala should be avoided if you’re trying to get pregnant or if you’re breastfeeding.

Why Are Apples So Healthy?

We all know that old saying: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

But have you ever wondered why that is? How one apple a day can bring about significant health benefits? If you have, then you’ll be glad to read this article. From strengthening the immune system, through preventing cancerous growths and to losing weight, say hello to your one apple a day!

How do apples do what they do?

An important research published in 2008 by the German cancer research center, showed that apples offer a significant health advantage. When comparing between a group that had less than one apple per day and a group that had one or more apples a day, the latter was found to have less risk of mouth cancer, larynx cancer, breast cancer, intestinal cancer, kidney cancer and ovarian cancer.

These findings support a new research performed at Cornell university, showing that the peel of the apple has strong anti-oxidant properties, a powerful block against the influences of breast cancer cells. Researchers found that the higher the concentraion of apples, the lower the concentration of cancerous cells.

Cancerous growths are uncontrollable growths of cells independently spreading through the body. The growths are based on three principal levels: The first stage causes mutations in cell DNA. The second, when the growth becomes malignant and grows faster, and finally when it metastases and spreads throughout the body.

In the case of a cancerous growth, apples aren’t only used as anti-oxidants, but also improve the function of the immune system, which helps clean out the growths at the early stages.

In addition to boosting the immune system and fighting cancerous growths, apples also help control the levels of cholesterol and sugars in the blood, prevent heart disease and improve mouth hygiene. The fact that they contain more than 80% water and a long line of essential vitamins, makes them one of the healthiest foods available.

The secret is in the nutritional fibers

Apples are considered a vital source of nutritional fibers. Eating one apple a day (with peel) can award us about 4.4 grams of nutritional fibers, which is 1/5 of our entire day’s recommended amount.

Nutritional fibers are materials found in foods that come from plants, and have a very important role in stimulating the digestive system and encouraging its function. Since they are not digested and taken apart in the body, they sate our hunger for a longer period of time. Extensive research has shown that those that do not get their daily recommended amount (at least 25 grams a day), deny themselves a host of health benefits. In addition, the researchers found that consuming these fibers is quite the effective method of losing weight.

The secret is in the chewing. Drinking apple juice will not bring about the same health benefits. We’d be happy to receive the essential sugars and vitamins, but we would not get the fibers.

A research conducted in China found that chewing can help the body regulate the amount of calories it absorbs from food.

What does this have to do with apples?

Everything. Apples are a terrific source of nutritional fibers, especially a group of fibers called Pectin. This is a group of complex carbohydrates that regulate our bowels, improve good cholesterol rates and is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial.

Researchers from UCLA have shown that consuming pectin instead of regular fibers, doubles the time it takes the stomach to empty from one hour to two. Meaning that we don’t feel hungry for a longer time. In fact, a recent research paper entitled: “Weight Loss Associated with a Daily Intake of Three Apples or Three Pears among Overweight Women”, shows that women suffering from overweight and were instructed to eat an apple or pear before each meal, lost significant weight, just for doing so. The women in the experiment were asked to eat regularly and just add the apple before the meal. What happened was that the apples and fibers crowded the stomach, increased the feeling of being full, and made the body absorb less calories.

Other sources of nutritional fibers are: Pears, Peaches, peas, carrots, seeds, nuts, peel of fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, oats and whole wheat. But apples offer many more advantages.

So if you want to:

Lose weight, eat one apple a day.

Strengthen your immune system, eat one apple a day.

Control the level of cholesterol, eat one apple a day.

Prevent the spread of cancerous cells, eat one apple a day.

And if you want to keep the doctor away - EAT ONE APPLE A DAY!

Strong Digestion & Constipation

Creating a strong digestion is very important for the system especially when you're constipated.
Foods that are not properly digested create toxins and impurities that get absorbed and localize in tissues and disrupt their true nature of functioning.

Here's what you can do to strengthen your digestive system so constipation won't occur -

  • herbal preparations
  • favor foods that enhance digestion
  • use of proper spices
  • knowing what to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • exercise, yoga and breathing techniques
  • proper food combinations
  • lifestyle and daily routine
  • stress management

Constipated?

Constipation is something that we all have experienced at some point in our lives.  Causes can be anything like poor diet, digestion and elimination.  Toxins tend to build up in tissues and block the channels of elimination.  Your lifestyle, what you do on a daily basis that is not in accordance to the laws of nature as well as the food you put in your body plays a major role as well.

The root causes of constipation are -

  • poor nutrition
  • poor digestion
  • toxins accumulating in tissues
  • blocked channels
  • accumulated mental stress
  • accumulated physical stress
  • disruption of the natural body rhythms

There's a lot you can do naturally to be relieved from constipation and here's one of them -

Mix 2 teaspoons of ghee (clarified butter) in a glass of warm milk and drink thirty minutes before bedtime.  It will definitely help with constipation and acidity!

Apple Cider Vinegar & Skin Tag

For so many years, apple cider vinegar has been used as a food and a medicine.  Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, amongst others have used vinegar as an energizing tonic and healer.

Apple cider vinegar helps with the following amongst others -

  • acne
  • allergies
  • nail fungus
  • sore throat
  • skin problems
  • asthma
  • sinus infection
But did you know that this can also remove skin tags!?!
Soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar, organic if possible.  Rub over skin tag.  Apply this around 2-3 times a day.  After some use, you'll see the tag changing color and it will fall off.

Did You Know - About Cherries

Did you know that cherries ease joint pains and alleviate headaches and migraines?  A study by researchers at East Lansing's Michigan State University showed that if you have arthritis or chronic headaches, having a bowl of cherries a day might alleviate your pain, minus the stomach upset so often triggered by painkillers.  Eating cherries can also reduce uric acid in the blood, which is the cause of arthritic pain and swelling.

Definitely have a bowl everyday.

Your Dosha And Sleep

"The goal of the Ayurvedic approach is to create more Ojas, the finest product of digestion that provides energy, enthusiasm, happiness, clarity of thinking, better coordination between the heart and mind and immunity.  Only the deepest, most restful sleep, called Stage Four Sleep by researchers, creates ojas," says an Ayurvedic expert from The Council of Maharishi Ayurveda Physicians.

Ayurveda identifies 3 types of sleep disorders -

1 - Vata sleep disorder - this is when you find it difficult to fall asleep (this is caused by a vata imbalance or mental stress).  You tend to toss and turn a lot, mind is over active, tends to correlate with worry and anxiety of day to day stresses.

2 - Pitta sleep disorder - this is when there is intermittent awakening - you fall asleep fine, but wake up every 90 minutes due to muscle tension, racing heart, emotions, fear, anger, sadness.  Or there is another pattern where one wakes up between 2-4am and has a ton of energy.

3 - Kapha sleep disorder - this is when you sleep long hours and wake up unrefreshed.  You feel sluggish, tired and completely exhausted even though you had a full nights sleep.

Which one most relates to you?
Look out for tomorrow's post, I'll give you some recommendations for each of the doshas.

10 American Meals That Are Hurting Us

Obesity, heart diseases, type 2 diabetes — recent studies have reminded us about something we have known for awhile: the Standard American Diet isn’t doing anyone any good. It has the acronym SAD for a reason.
Certainly what we eat is paired with a lack of physical activity, and bad health can’t solely be blamed on eating poorly, but when it comes down to it, we can blame a lot of our modern day problems on our modern day diet.
So what are we eating that’s so bad for us? Here are 10 dishes and meals that symbolize everything that’s wrong with the modern diet.
1. The Burger
10 Common American Meals That Are Hurting Us
Let’s get one thing straight: a burger can be made with good products. At its core, it’s not that bad of a concoction, and if you eat one once in a great while it’s simply an enjoyable indulgence. Unfortunately the fast food version that so many of us eat in succession is another thing entirely. Filled with additives and sugars, it’s no wonder that we’re addicted. A McDonald’s Big Mac has 550 calories, 29 grams of fat and that secret sauce is full of tasty ingredients like Propylene Glycol Alginate and Calcium Disodium.
2. The Smoothie
Purchased smoothies, that is. When you make them at home you can ensure that you’re only adding in fresh ingredients and enough fruit that you don’t need to add in any additional sweetener. A medium Pina Colada smoothie from Orange Julius/Dairy Queen comes in at 340 calories (about two thirds of a Big Mac). It might actually be better for you to just eat the fruits themselves; a recent studyshowed that people who ate whole fruit were less likely to get type 2 diabetes, but those who drank fruit juice were at increased risk. Know where your sugar is coming from and how much you’re ingesting.
3. The Toast with Margarine
New flash: if you want to eat butter, eat real butter. Trans-fat loaded margarine isn’t good for your heart and you’re better off eating the real stuff.
4. The Bowl of Pasta
Refined white flour and not much else, the staple diet of a bowl of pasta is high in carbohydrates and not much else. As with everything, a balanced diet can include pasta, but opt for freshly made and cover it with good things like olive oil and fresh vegetables.
5. Anything That’s Branded as Low Fat
Want to blame the obesity epidemic on something? Blame it on the low fat craze, because around the time that low fat foods started being marketed, waistlines started growing exponentially. Of course, this could be a mere correlation, but it’s an important correlation. As people chose fat-free desserts and low-calorie snacks, they filled their diets full of added sugars and empty carbohydrates. We need fat in our diet, we just need to make sure it’s the good fat. Even saturated fat is much less harmful than we have been led to believe.
6. The Lunch Sandwich
A sandwich made with whole wheat bread and stacked with meat and cheese? Unless you baked your own bread, made your own sausage and bought your cheese from the farmer next door, chances are that lunch isn’t just a sandwich, it’s a bomb of processed foods. Not to mention all the mayonnaise spread on it. Buy bread that is made fresh, so it doesn’t have the preservatives to keep it on the shelf for ages, and opt for fresh vegetables and leafy greens as well as spreads like hummus which will make that sandwich ten times tastier and better for you.
7. The Meal That Isn’t Actually a Meal
Credit: bokeh burger via flickr
I’m talking about all those snack foods on the market that don’t constitute real meals, but have just as many calories, if not more, as eating a real meal. Not to mention all the processed ingredients that they include. Nobody should be eating Deep-Fried Doritos Stuffed With Nacho Cheese.
8. The Breakfast Cereal
Don’t be fooled for a second that most breakfast cereals are part of a complete and nutritious breakfast. Things like Reese’s Puffs and Lucky Charms (both of which are about 41% sugar) simply shouldn’t qualify as “breakfast.” In fact, one study showed that cereals marketed to children had 85% more sugar in them.
9. The Chicken Nuggets
Those McDonald’s Chicken Nuggets? Only about 50% actual chicken meat. And if you got fries with that, you might want to imagine what’s happening to your heart.
10. The Coffee and Pastry
You’re pressed for time in the morning so you figure a coffee and pastry is your quickest and easiest breakfast. Well, watch what you order. If you want to drink coffee, drink coffee, but stay clear of anything that entails turning coffee into something else entirely, like a Grande Starbucks Mocha which has 240 calories in it. And if you think going for the whole wheat scone or the bran muffin is your best bet for staying healthy, think again. They’re simply one of those things that sound too good be true. Better opt for oatmeal with a hefty dose of nuts, seeds and fresh fruit.
